One-legged Wrestler, Anthony Robles, Wins NCAA Wrestling National Title, matches.
This is an old story from 2011, but one that is well worth re-visiting and telling again.
Achievement Starts With Having The Right Mindset.
Individual Sports have a unique advantage over team sports like football, basketball, soccer, etc.
Even though those sports offer many benefits to kids and adults, individual sports are different because it’s one person against another in competition.
Martial arts and combat sports like wrestling or Brazilian Jiu Jitsu further empower kids and adults in that it’s one on one combat where the individual can test themselves against a resisting opponent in a safe manner.
In fact, we consider wrestling as a martial art that is closely related to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
This story shows that a physical difference that many may see as a disability can be an advantage in the right situation.
As you see below, Anthony doesn’t see himself as having any disability at all. Undoubtedly that’s why he was so successful.
Anthony Robles, a 2x All American Wrestler for Arizona State. He won his final match in the 2011 Division I NCAA Championship by a score of 7-1. This completed a perfect, undefeated 36-0 season for Anthony.
Anthony Robels was born without a right leg, but Anthony clearly did not let that be an excuse.
“I really don’t see missing my leg as a handicap,” Robles told Philadelphia television station WPVI before the tournament.
“You know, my parents raised me strong and they didn’t give me any special treatment. So, I believe I can do anything I set my mind to and wrestling is something I enjoy, I love it and I’m just trying to be best at it.”
Wrestling and Martial Arts Empower Both Kids and Adults.
We believe that martial arts are a vehicle for creating a positive mindset and one that helps push each person to higher levels of achievement not just in Jiu Jitsu, but in life.
When you are challenged and overcome those challenges you begin to believe in yourself and what you can do. You develop grit (mental toughness) and self confidence in addition to so many other physical and mental benefits.
