How To Develop Mental Toughness and Confidence In Kids.
It’s time to talk about another core tenet of martial arts. In many ways, this tenet brings all the other tenets together – and it explains why kids who study martial arts like Brazilian Jiu Jitsu achieve more at home, in school, in other sports, and everywhere else! We call it Indomitable Spirit.
What does it mean to have an indomitable spirit?
It means that you don’t let defeats set you back. You don’t just give up when you run into challenges. You might not succeed every time you try something, but a child with indomitable spirit doesn’t internalize defeat. Instead they rise to the occasion, accept defeat gracefully, and use what they learn for the next challenge.
Indomitable spirit is a core tenet of martial arts that prevents kids from being bullied. A child who has it can’t be bullied because a bully can see that their spirit is strong.
Let me put it another way. When a person has an indomitable spirit, they can be physically defeated… but they will never be mentally and emotionally defeated. That’s important because defeats are inevitable in life. Everybody sometimes falls short… although your son or daughter is much less likely to be defeated physically as they develop the skills taught in our Brazilian Jiu Jitsu class.
What makes the difference between someone with indomitable spirit and someone without it is the what happens next after a defeat. When the mind and emotions remain strong – unbeaten. These kids do not have the mental self talk telling them that they are a loser or that they are too weak or any other negative internal dialogue that dis-empowers them.
Kids training in our Brazilian Jiu Jitsu program learn that although they may lose at times, they are not a loser.
They carry this over to everything else they do in life.
This is an extremely valuable skill for your child to develop.
We often talk to kids about the importance of holding their heads high. Shame has no place in our classes.
Kids who study martial arts learn that they will face challenges and they’ll lose sometimes, but that they will keep working and overcome each challenge set before them.
