I’ve previously written about how martial arts classes can help kids be less destructive. They learn how to control their bodies. Now, I want to talk about a related issue.
Any parent of young kids knows that their energy seems boundless. It can be a challenge to keep up! Many parents end the day exhausted from running around after their kids.
This often even happens when your kids are older and in school most of the day. After sitting still in a classroom for hours they get home and unleash that pent-up energy – and you end up feeling overwhelmed by it.
I get it. I’m an experienced martial arts instructor, and I’m still sometimes blown away by the sheer intensity of kids’ energy.
It can be a lot to take – and the only way to deal with it is to give them a productive outlet for it. In other words, you need to provide them with somewhere to place that energy.
I suggest Texarkana Jiu Jitsu.
Here’s the thing I tell parents all the time:
Kids have that energy for a reason. As a parent, the last thing you want to do is encourage your kids to sit around all day. Many parents struggle at times to get them to put down the video games and go outside.
Studying the martial arts is a great way for kids to put their intense energy to use. It teaches them that energy is movement – and that using their energy can help them achieve their goals.
That might sound lofty, but I don’t mean it that way. A kid isn’t thinking about how studying martial arts will help them in college or the workplace, but it does. Harnessing energy is an important life skill.
When you bring your child to Texarkana Jiu Jitsu, they’ll learn to work hard. They’ll push their bodies in a controlled way, learning to use their energy constructively. By the time they leave one of our classes, they’ll have burned off some of that energy, and they’ll be better able to focus on their homework, chores, and family activities.
Does any of this mean that your kids won’t sometimes still be running around the house?
No. They’re still kids. There are going to be times that their energy will overflow. And when it does, you can suggest practicing their martial arts moves!

PS – Keep an eye out for another post coming soon. In it, I’ll talk about how our martial arts classes have helped kids build the habit of exercise. You don’t want to miss it!
