Should I learn BJJ (Brazilian Jiu Jitsu) or MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) in Texarkana?
It really depends on you!

- Are you looking to get in shape, develop self defense, reduce stress, take up a new positive hobby? …
- What do you enjoy doing?
- Are you wanting to compete in BJJ or MMA?…
Different gyms/schools will have different focuses even if they broadly are teaching the same type of art.
If it’s fitness then both could work as could many other things like weight lifting and running among others.
The same would be true of self defense or having a positive habit, stress reduction, socialization, etc.
If you think you want to get into a competition, both martial arts have a sport aspect.

Learn One Thing At A Time Vs. Learning Too Much As A Beginner.
One thing I would say as someone who has trained in and taught many martial arts including MMA is that in MMA it’s important to develop skills in different areas.
It’s often a challenge if someone is new to martial arts to learn everything at once incorporating stand up, clinch work, and ground work in MMA. This means that each area will have less time in each part than if you had the same amount of training time training in one of those areas.
Safety and Injuries.
As an adult, we have to consider risks of injury. Training in MMA often has much higher rates of injury from taking strikes and hard takedowns. MMA is just harder on the body (and brain when we consider concussions!). Most beginner adult students would rather not get punched or kicked in the face! Of course, you can train in a safe manner depending upon the gym. Even purely cosmetic minor injuries like black eyes would be much more likely to occur in an MMA class and a Jiu Jitsu class.
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu can be trained even at high intensity levels much more safely than Mixed Martial Arts.
